Kickball does “Wear it Purple Day” with Leandlease - Coming out is important but everyone deserves a safe space to be out One of our founders, David Parsons, joined a dynamic panel discussion with The Community Hub led by Dale Connor and special guests including Hannah Conda. While some LGBTQIA+ people are well supported in their families and traditional communities after they come out – that isn’t universally the case. David shared his experiences in communities and environments that don’t signal safety for queers people to be themselves. Tolerance and acceptance don’t always signal inclusion. David spoke how his work history and history with other sports leagues led him to create Emerald City Kickball as a safe community space for people to express and discover themselves authentically. Through kickball, we’ve seen many newly out LGBTQIA+ individuals build their own communities and support networks via their teams each season even during the pandemic. Anna has coached or competed in a large range of sports at local and national level, including sailing, netball, baseball, softball, touch rugby, ballet and rowing (to name a few). Outside of sport, Anna has worked in the regulatory and compliance environment for over 17 years. Annas down time is usually spent not sitting down. If she's not in the garage restoring her 1968 Morris Mini Deluxe, you’ll usually find her somewhere in the garden, out catching up with friends or getting out of her comfort zone trying something new. Phil is one of the original founders of the Perth league and has been an active member since its inception nearly five years ago. She joined ECKB while looking to find new friends and connect with others who share similar interests. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. As Director of Membership and Finance, he ensures our LGBTIQA+ community can focus on what really matters: playing, connecting, and having fun in a safe space for our community to gather. Rik comes with more than 18 years of experience in the finance industry. He has deep expertise across strategy, innovation, and financial management. One of Rik’s proudest achievements is designing a customer-centric hardship model tailored to support marginalised community members. It combined strategic thinking with genuine empathy, ensuring people experiencing financial vulnerability were met with understanding, flexibility, and practical solutions. That same philosophy lives in his work at ECKB: creating fair, inclusive systems that make it possible for everyone to participate, belong, and feel supported. As Director of Operations, he’s the engine behind our game day magic. He oversees equipment management, referee coordination, field bookings, enforcing rules, and yes… yelling “KICKBALL!” loud enough to gather over 200 kickballers. Off the field, Kirk works in Operations in the disability sector. Disability rights aren’t just part of his job — they’re close to his heart. He brings that same drive for accessibility and inclusion into every part of the league, ensuring ECKB is a genuinely safe and welcoming space for all. Kirk originally joined ECKB looking for more queer friends and community, and found something even better: a community full of people who are always ready to show up. He loves how deeply players respect the space, how quick they are to help, and how eager they are to give back. Kirk’s perfect Sunday morning consists of sitting in the sun with a croissant or a good deli sandwich and diving into fresh music releases. Kirks is also a big advocate for blood and plasma donation within the queer community. As Program Management Lead, he’s the one quietly weaving all the moving parts together — tracking progress, deadlines, and milestones across every sub-committee so the league runs smoothly. He’s also the mastermind behind kickball magic. From jersey purchasing, player rankings, survey, and more, Austen ensures kickballers have a fun and affirmative experience. His experience includes spending 1 and a half years in international development for the Australian government, working in Vanuatu and the Philippines. There, he helped local organisations strengthen their tech capacity and improve land information mapping. He is well versed in project management and leading global teams. When he wasn’t hiking volcanoes or trying every local during his travels, he was developing his leadership skills and a people-centric philosophy. Austen brings that same people-centric approach everywhere he goes. Austen joined ECKB a few years ago after realising he was craving a sense of community — specifically one that wasn’t centred solely around late nights and loud parties. Kickball turned out to be exactly that: a wholesome, joyful space where community is built around meaningful connections, in broad daylight. Representative, Perth Phil acts as the key link between the National Management Committee and the Perth Local Sub-Committee. In this role, he supports the delivery of national initiatives at a local level, tracks outcomes and lessons learned from events, and provides feedback to help shape future planning. He also advocates for the resources and support needed to ensure local activities are sustainable, inclusive, and successful. Phil is one of the original founders of the Perth league and has been an active member since its inception nearly five years ago. Prior to stepping into the National Area Representative role, he served as Director of Finance and Memberships, where he played a key role in strengthening governance, financial sustainability, and member engagement as the league continued to grow. Outside of kickball, Phil brings over 20 years of experience in the finance and insurance industry, including more than a decade in leadership roles. His professional background has shaped a strong focus on structure, accountability, and people-centred decision-making, all of which he brings into his work within the community. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. She has been part of Emerald City Kickball Perth since Season 3 and loves the community this crazy sport has built. So much so that as the co-chair for the Gay Games XIII bid she had it added as an official sport to compete in for the upcoming Gay Games to be held in Perth 2030. Catherine believes Kickball should be about the fun and loves it when people dress up with each week’s theme! Outside of kickball Catherine is a dog mom to Honey the Spoodle and Penelope the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. As the go-to person for marketing and communications, he looks after everything from hyping the local league and sharing its biggest moments to managing media interest and keeping the brand looking sharp and consistent everywhere it shows up. He wrangles internal updates, external promos, press inquiries, and all the design bits and pieces — making sure Emerald City Kickball Perth always feels welcoming, fun, and unmistakably on brand while shining a spotlight on what makes the community special. Scott has been part of ECKB Perth since Season 4 and stepped into the role of go-to Comms guy in Season 6. While he’ll be the first to admit he’s not the strongest player on the field, he loves that kickball is about way more than just kicking a ball — it’s the socials, the vibes, and the community spirit that keep him coming back. By day, Scott is a full-time freelance graphic designer who’s been working from home for over 10 years (long before it was cool). Designing for ECKB Perth gives him a creative playground to experiment, collaborate with a very different kind of client, and put his skills to work where they make a real impact. When he’s not at kickball, Scott quite literally invented the modern idea of being a plant-dad and is the internationally published author of the coffee-table book Boys with Plants. Imogen works closely with community members to understand diverse lived experiences and translate these insights into meaningful, people centred outcomes. She is passionate about creating environments that foster belonging and psychological safety, where individuals feel empowered to show up as their authentic selves. Her strength lies in thoughtful consultation, relationship building and supporting inclusive practices that align with Kickball’s values. By day, Imogen works across project coordination and stakeholder engagement and is the Co‑Chair of Powering Pride within her organisation, where she contributes to advancing inclusion and advocacy for LGBTQIA+ employees. She is also currently studying her Certificate IV in Human Resources, further strengthening her practical and professional approach to people focused work and inclusive organisational practices. She joined Emerald City Kickball to be part of a vibrant, values driven, inclusive community that actively prioritises connection and belonging. With a diversity of experience in community engagement across not-for-profit organisations, Toro contributes substantial practical and interpersonal expertise. His professional background includes technical AED advisement, large-scale vendor management, sponsorship development, and volunteer oversight, demonstrating his capability in navigating complex operational environments and commitment to delivering meaningful results. Since joining ECKB Perth in 2025, Toro has actively contributed to the organisation through roles such as Social Captain and Team Captain. His dedication has been acknowledged by awards including Baby Emerald (Season 7) and Glinda (Season 8).
